Offshore Wind 2019

Having undergone a journey of rapid cost reduction, the offshore wind sector is now at a decisive point in its existence. Merchant projects are emerging in markets like Germany and the Netherlands that could threaten the access to the cheap capital that has been a key driver in bringing costs down. Yet this very same trend is already triggering innovation in the sector around revenue stabilisation – including corporate PPAs and aggregated offtake models.

Underpinning the drive for offshore wind is a need to replace gigawatts of old coal and nuclear capacity globally, and European heavyweights will continue to search for the next big markets to which they can export their knowhow. The US and Taiwan have already made headlines as hotspots of activity, with Poland set to join them during the course of 2019.
